How To Use DIY Party Craft Ideas For Every Event

By Janine Hughes

There are so many things that can be created to put a special and unique spin on any type of celebration. DIY party craft ideas done well can look just as professional as hiring an event planner or purchasing expensive items. The great thing about it DIY is that it can save a lot of money towards a one-time celebration and it can also be a lot of fun to do with friends and family in preparation for the big event.

When we think of crafts for parties, a child's birthday party is usually the first thing that comes to mind. Crafts are great for any type of birthday, regardless of the theme. Get all of the party guests involved by having them build their own cupcakes. Place an already frosted cupcake in the middle of a paint palette made of plastic. This will be the plate.

In each of the grooves of the palette, you can put a different kind of topping for each child to use. Good toppings are chocolate drops, gummy bears, sprinkles and jelly beans. You can also make fun little toppers for them to finish with, either on a straw or on a toothpick.

Baby showers are almost always done in pink or blue, but sometimes the pregnant mother hasn't yet revealed what gender her baby is. A great game to play at the shower, which also can act as decoration for a time, is to cover an entire area with balloons in pink and blue. Each guest gets to attempt bursting a balloon of their choice with a dart or pin.

Inside each balloon, place a piece of folded paper. All but one will say 'Try again!' In just one correctly coloured balloon, place a note saying 'Yes! It's a boy/girl!' The winner gets a prize.

A New Year's celebration is a glam event that deserves lots of sparkle. It is not difficult to bring something special to everyday items to achieve such an effect. Votive candle holders can be decorated with a band of glitter by using a paintbrush to apply a band of PVA glue around the rim. Make this band about an inch wide. While the glue is wet, roll the holder around in some glitter in either gold or silver - or whatever other colour is desired - and allow it to dry. Tea light candles inside small glasses work just as well and this can be used as a table centrepiece or dotted around the venue.

Pinatas are great for any age or occasion, depending on what's inside. It's a lot of fun to make a pinata from cardboard for a kid's birthday party, but consider making a star or moon-shaped one for an occasion where the guests are all adults. They can be filled with goodies as tradition states, or they can simply be used as decoration to hang from the ceiling at different levels.

If you like to get into the Halloween spirit, this unique idea is simple and quick enough, but it will also make an impact. Take a pumpkin and cut it in half and remove everything inside. You will now have two shells that you can turn into ice buckets or drinks coolers simply by placing a bowl of ice inside to fit the hollow part. Put cans or bottles in the ice and place several around the room for everyone's convenience.
