What Every Parent Should Understand Regarding Natural Treatments For Baby Eczema

By Helen Miller

When babies are prone to skin rashes, they can be very uncomfortable. Fortunately, parents may find help through these natural treatments for baby eczema. Their use can often relieve the problem or at least make it somewhat more bearable.

Many parents learn very quickly to avoid products that are overly perfumed. The best products are hypoallergenic and unscented. Even products formulated for babies that have the scent often associated with a new born may cause the skin problem to become worse. It is best to avoid these products whenever possible.

Once you find a brand of a product that seems to work, stock up on it. It seems that manufacturers are continually changing and improving products. Unfortunately, some of the ingredients in the improved formula may be the wrong thing for the child's skin condition. While the product may be improved for everyone else, you may find yourself looking once again for something that does not cause a child to break out. In some cases, the best option may be to make your own laundry detergent.

One tip is a simple reminder to avoid bathing the child too often. Daily baths tend to be drying to the skin and can make the skin problem worse. Instead, skip a day and allow the natural skin oils to moisturize the skin.

Replace soap with oatmeal. Try placing a small amount in the end of a cotton sock to wash the body. It provides the soapiness needed for the bath but soothes skin that has become irritated. Be sure to throw the oatmeal out after each bath.

Add bleach to the bathwater. The ratio is one half cup for a forty gallon tub of water, so if using a smaller amount of water for the child, cut back on the bleach. Do not allow the child to ingest bleach water and be sure to use a gentle moisturizer after bathing.

If all else fails, use a hydrocortisone cream. Hydrocortisone can soothe nerve endings that cause the rash and make it easier for the child to get to sleep. Many of the creams also provide moisturizing properties. If the medication available over the counter does not work, a doctor can provide a prescription that may give better results.

While this type of skin condition is often miserable, there are some things parents can do to help. Natural treatments for baby eczema are often helpful. Take steps to prevent the problem from beginning if possible.
