Tips On How To Sew A Straight Edge

By Amy Rogers

Many people mistake sewing to be an easy thing to accomplish, but it is not. Those who have been doing it for years will say that the task of inserting a piece of thread to the needle eye is just the start of a harder venture. Patience as well as diligence will go a long way in the field of sewing.

Even with the utilization of a machine, sewing neatly can still be very hard. One needs to develop a certain level of relationship with the tools that he or she will be using in order to handle them better. Below are some tips that can help you how to sew a straight edge.

Before you start pedaling that machine and starting to sew, one needs to remember to sit straight and be in line with your apparatus. Yes, hovering over your machine in an awkward position will not only hurt your back but also prevent you from sewing straight. Being lined up straight with your machine will give you better chances of acing sewing straight.

Almost all sewing apparatus comes with markings that indicate allowance on its foot plate. This was put there for a reason and following such markings will not only help you sew straight but with the right amount of allowance as well. However, there may be machines which do not have such like older ones and this is where the next tip comes into play.

One can always improvise and use your resources such as tapes that can be stuck to the plate of the equipment so that you will have a marking or indicator. Check for tapes with solid colors or patterns as transparent ones are hard to spot or see. An improvised indicator will also let you place custom seam allowances.

Another common mistake that most first timers do is watching the needle as they sew. This will get you off track as you are focusing on the wrong thing instead of the markers that you have put. The up and down movement that the needle makes can also be hypnotizing as well as dizzying as can result to a headache if you keep staring at it.

Some individuals will really find it hard to just follow tape or seam markers so another alternative is drawing on the fabric. Using a washable pen, you can draw a straight line in your fabric in order to be able to follow it better. However, always test such pens on scrap fabrics to make sure that they really are washable.

One thing also that is very common among people who have just started such is that they seem to be a little jittery and speed up even when there is no need to. If you are a starter, it does not hurt to slow down and ensure that what you are doing is right. Always remember that you are in control of the machine and not the other way around.

Above are just some of the few things that you can do in order to sew. What may seem easy may be the most difficult. However, you do not need to be afraid and just keep practicing because it will really go a long way.
