Growing In Small Spaces Using Scrog Technique

By Enid Hinton

Screen of Green is a well known method for growing large marijuana plants in a small space. It is also called Scrog. If you don't have enough space or you would like to get the most from your single plant, this method is the right one for you. You can control the height of your stem and make sure every piece of it has enough light. Optimal use of space and improved light penetration are just some of advantages this technique offers.

The secret is in using screen and promoting horizontal growth. Between growing and flowering periods, you should set appropriate screen just above your plants. Since the plants are still growing, the shoots will come through the holes, and you will be able to bend them on the screen and fix them in horizontal position.

You can use different materials for your mesh, for example trellis netting, chicken wire or any other material with appropriate hole pattern. The holes can be smaller or larger, as long as they are suited for their purpose. You will also need something to hold the shoots on, for example tie straps or different clips. The point is to create a flat screen of buds on the top, a nice, even canopy.

After a while, all flowers will be horizontally positioned on the top of the net, all adequately supplied by light. This method will make sure that they all have the same amount of light. Now you just have to wait until the flowering cycle is over, and you'll be ready for harvesting. Using this technique, you will be able to keep both weight and height under control.

Another popular method called SOG is more about speeding up the production. Using this technique, plants are promoted to flower, allowing continuous production. Screen of Green is more about maximized production in small spaces. This method promotes horizontal growth and makes sure all your flowers get enough light at the end of the flowering cycle.

It is quite important to fix the screen appropriately. It should hold the weight of all your plants, so they can spend all their energy in supplying nutrients to the flowers. Use feminized plants and don't worry if all your stems aren't of the same size. This doesn't really matter, if you use this particular technique. Simply bend every branch when it reaches the top, and it will get enough light when needed.

It is much better to use only Sativa strains for this type of growth. Indica strains have much stronger stems and cannot be bent so easily. Besides, Sativa strains have higher internodal distance. When approximately sixty percent of your mesh is filled, it is time to change the photo period to 12/12 hours. Flowering will cover the rest of the mesh.

You may do some other things to maximize your harvest as well. For example, if you eliminate maybe eighty percent of the central shoot when your plant is young, instead of eliminating the whole central shoot, you will get more new branches. Traditional pruning creates two new shoots at cutting point, while this way of pruning may result with up to eight new ones.
