What Is An Organic Lawn Weed Killer?

By Enid Hinton

A weed is any plant that grows in a surrounding that is not of its own. They can be frustrating especially if they grow on the garden lawns. The beauty of such lawns will be interfered with. Fortunately, there is an organic lawn weed killer that aids in getting rid of the problem.

They can grow at any location it sees fit. The only ingredients it requires is moisture, sunlight and a bare space. However, some conditions may trigger its growth like having damp yards and not using the correct fertilizers. Such conditions may cause the grass to be weak hence turn into an opportunity for intruders to encroach in such areas. Therefore, there should be proper management of yards to remove any loop holes for the invasive plant species.

There are different methods yard owners could use to rid their problem. One may choose to use their bare hands to uproot the weeds. The negative side of such a method is, it uses a lot of effort and time. To avoid time wastage and quicker results, chemical control technique is used. This method should be done at the right time to achieve quality and effective outcomes.

In general, the best time to apply these killers is during the summer months. At this time of the year the species is usually emerging vigorously making it the ideal time. Additionally, it is advised to smear nitrogen fertilizer about 10 days before the operation begins.

Common pesticides used are:

Vinegar (acetic acid). It one of the non-selective killers. It causes death to both yard grass and weeds. It has a tendency of causing plants to desiccate and eventually death. Hence, when using the acid, yard owners should use brushes to directly paint it to specific plants in question.

Herbicidal soaps. They are non- selective and tends to break and interfere with the protective layer of leaves in plants. This causes dehydration and death of leaves. Unfortunately, they effectively work on newly upcoming shrubs and fail to kill roots for older and mature ones.

Corn gluten meal. It works best on less matured weeds. For it to effectively work, some environmental conditions should be taken into consideration.

Special instructions are to be followed during the chemical application. First, when the chemical is in liquid form, the weather condition should be partly sunny, cloudy and not raining. This assures the chemical remains intact. If using granular products, water should be smeared when application process ends.

It is very important that a yard owner should ensure the problem would not re- emerge. One should for instance use the right mowing techniques to ensure it does not create bare patches which would attract more intrusive species. Also, a yard owner should use the correct fertilizers which would encourage strong growth and discouraging invading plants.

To conclude, the pest problem can be solved but yard owners should be responsible and ensure the same problem does not bother them in future by initiating a preventive measure to the problem.
