Common Baby Sleep Problems

By Glennon Doley

No matter how good a sleeper your toddler is, you're bound to run into a problem or two from time to time. Those instances may happen when your baby grows to an older age, they do have sleep problems such as sleepwalking. These temporary sleep problems will not last forever, however, when you find your children having these sleep problems, your sleep will be affected too.

Babies are born with many different reflexes. You will know that your baby is having a normal startle or "moro" reflex because you will see your baby bring his arms out wide before bringing them back together. The moro reflex only occurs in a baby for that moment, however, it can easily disturb their sleep. Some babies can drift back to sleep when their startle reflex wakes them, but other babies will not be able doing this and they will wake from sleeping and begin to cry. After 5-6 months the moro reflex will go away.

How to solve it, You can be more gentle with your baby whenever you put them to sleep. You should not have sudden movements and always support your baby to make them feel safe. You can also use a swaddle to swaddle your little one.

Your little one does not know how to go to sleep himself. Do you notice that we suddenly wake up without knowing why. The difference with most adults, however, is that we can simply roll over and go back to sleep. However, your baby may not know how to go back to sleep himself if you also help him to do so.

How do you manage? You need to foster independence to your children to let him go back to sleep himself A parent needs to guide his baby how to go to sleep, or else he will never learn how to do so. You can begin slowly by introducing a soft toy or blanket during cuddle time. Later, when you put your baby in his crib, give him the soft toy or blanket. The hope is that the toy will remind him of pleasant, comforting times with you and when he awakes he will find the toy, snuggle it, and drift back to sleep.

Sometimes your baby goes down for a nap in the middle of the day and just won't wake up. Other times she's up all night and wants to play. The reason is because your children do not know when it is night time, they do not have any differentiation to darkness and brightness.

Sleep Solutions: It's important to teach your blind baby the cues that indicate a shift from day to night. To make her understand that it is night time, you will have to force into her head some night time habits. Besides following a simple schedule (dinner, bath, bedtime story, etc.), also choose a special night time songs, night time story books, and night time toys that only come out during the evening hours. Then, when you begin to sing one of these nighttime songs, for example, your baby will know that it's getting late and almost time for bed.

Let your baby know about the sounds that only happens at night. I always bring Ivan out to listen to the crickets chirping during the evenings. These sounds help to calm him down. He will then be able to identify that night has come when he hears a cricket sound.
