The standards govern various components including class size, services, ratio of teacher to students, administration, curriculum, assessment, interaction between the teacher and children, classroom environment, and standards. The curriculum is designed for pupils of different ages. Different facilities place different levels of emphasis on the various components.

The benefits of preschools to the future cognitive abilities of children have been controversial. The controversy results from the fact that some studies support that preschools boost cognitive ability of the child while others dispute these findings. Some studies state that the boost is within the areas of reading and mathematics while preschools are detrimental to cooperation and social development.

The research has led to the emergence of various teaching techniques, which are favored by different preschools.
