Various Vital Facts Concerning Egg Donation

By Janice Knowles

One of the most disturbing experiences is when a couple is not able to conceive a child. Fortunately, there are many other techniques that can be used to make it possible to conceive. One of the many techniques is egg donation. Despite the fact that most people will consider it as a win-win situation, those considering it ought to not only consider the benefits but also the shortfalls. The benefits it comes with are mainly for the concerned couple.

One of the main benefits of the procedure is the fact that through donating eggs, one makes it possible for couples who may have had inability to do so to have children. This stems from the gift of love that is often considered as among the greatest. There however is also the issue of the money that is paid to donors. This plays a key role too but is rarely considered as the driving factor, at least not for the majority.

Most of the couples will offer payments of between 5000 and 10000 dollars, exclusive of other costs such as that of retrieving the eggs. This is an amount of money that a good number of women would be willing to consider. Most adverts are targeted at institutions of higher learning such as colleges. This is because students are likely to be in need of such an amount of money for payment of loans and to cater for other bills.

Ovarian Hyper stilmulation is one of the biggest risks associated with donating eggs. The condition will among other things lead to accumulation of fluids, swelling of the abdomen and stress of the gastro intestines. At certain times, the women that do the donation will gain weight, experience difficulty breathing, blood clots and kidney failure. Donors below the ideal weight will be at greater risk of suffering from the condition.

There also is the increased risk of getting cancer. This normally results because of drugs that are used for stimulation of ovaries to facilitate retrieval. These increase the risk factors of contracting cancers such as uterine cancer, breast cancer and ovarian cancer. There are various other possible risks. Most donors will experience cramping, with most first timers experiencing some pain. There are also instances when patients will suffer from damage of internal organs, bleeding and infections. The side effects will affect different people in a different way.

There of course is the emotional side effect. This is whereby some women will have the feeling that the child in question is biologically theirs. For persons that donate and end up in such situations, it is very important that they go for counseling.

The process known as trans-vaginal ultrasound aspiration is used for retrieving eggs. It is a surgical procedure performed when one is conscious, through administration of sedatives though. There is a tube attached a probe which is used in guiding suctioning needles into each ovary. Mature oocytes are removed from the follicles. Drugs are used in prevention of nausea.

The egg retrieval process involves surgery. Therefore, it is possible that organs close to the ovaries may be damaged. The organs at risk of damage include the bladder, uterus and bowels.
