Some Of The Famous Wiccan Holidays

By Roseann Hudson

The wiccans have been having a lot of holidays for many years that some inspired some of the modern ones that are being celebrated today. Now if one would research on each holiday of the modern calendar, he will see that almost all of them would have a Pagan origin. Just to give some background on this, here are some wiccan holidays that are popular worldwide.

Probably the most famous of all these dates would be none other than the Feast of Samhain or more commonly known in the modern world as Halloween. Although most people celebrate Halloween with kids dressing up as ghosts, its origin actually stems out from a witch tradition. It is usually celebrated during October 31 and November 1 and is known to be the time where the dead are able to visit the world of the living.

Now everyone knows that Christmas is known to be the birth of Christ but what many do not know is that the event itself did not happen on December 24. The date December 24 came from the date of the Pagan holiday which is known as Yule. This event transpires during December 23 and it is the time wherein the Sun God is born anew.

Now another very popular holiday in the Pagan world is known as Ostara which happens to be on the month of March. Now this tradition is actually a tribute to the Goddess of Fertility because it is during this time that the Goddess would bestow her fertility powers on to women. The symbol of the Goddess is actually a bunny and an egg which is actually the inspiration for modern day Eastern.

One of the biggest holidays that is celebrated by the wiccans and the pagans would be known as Beltane. Beltane is actually the date of the coronation of the Sun god and it is a time when the sun gets stronger which results in blossoming flowers and vibrant greenery. It is usually celebrated either on April 30 or May 1 which is actually the same time as modern day summer vacation.

Now Mabon is a time wherein the wiccans would actually wine, dine, and be merry. This would happen on September 21 and is actually the counterpart of Thanksgiving which would happen on the Autumn Equinox. During this time, the length of the night and day are equal and it is here where they will pay tribute.

Now one very important tradition or ritual that is practiced would be Litha during the midsummer. If one would observe, it is during the midsummer that the sun is at its peak when it comes to heat. Now this ritual which happens on June 21, is the time wherein the Sun God is supposedly at his most powerful and the wiccans are paying tribute to his power.

So as one would observe, each holiday would actually have a Pagan origin. Now if one is a witch or a wiccan, he would have to observe all of these holidays. In the modern world, everyone is actually still celebrating these Pagan traditions but in a more commercialized manner.
