Important Facts About Newborn Circumcision

By Freida Michael

Parents need to make a tough choice after and even before they receive their bundle of joy. Before taking the baby boy home they have to decide whether he should get circumcised or not. It is the act of surgically removing the foreskin of the penis so as to expose the end of it. Some parents have it simple because the choice is based on religious beliefs. For others, the choice is a little more difficult since they have to weigh all the benefits against all the cons before they decide. Newborn circumcision is a decision that has to be made after talking to the doctors.

Some of those that circumcise their baby boy due to religious reasons, have to so this so that their son can look like all the other men in their family. Some do it for various reasons like hygiene reasons. The procedure is usually done after a week and a half. It can either be performed by the doctor or at home for some religious ritual circumcision.

Some doctors usually shy away from doing these procedures for various reasons. Some of the reasons that doctors might choose to postpone the event is if the child has some medical condition and they fit it a risk factor to do the procedure on them.

Some of the risks that are associated with this procedure include penile damage. This is when the doctors cut the fore skin too short or too long. Cutting it to short can cause the penile to be disfigured and the child has to go for surgery to have it reconstructed. If the cut is too long the baby needs to go back and get the procedure redone.

Another reason that might make parents to shy away is the surgical risks involved. Some of this risks include extreme bleeding and also infection if it is not taken care of well. Even though these complications are rare there is also a slight chance that they might occur. Some others fear the pain that their son will go through so they choose not to circumcision.

Some refuse to have the procedure done on their children because the removal of the foreskin leaves the head unprotected. This can cause irritation of that area. This irritation can cause the urethra, urinary opening to get smaller and one might need to take their child back to hospital for surgery to correct this. This surgery is expensive and some might not afford it.

If the parents do decide to go ahead with the procedure they have to take good care of their son. To avoid infections they have to change the diaper of the child very often. This is so that the urine and the stool do not cause infections. If the doctor had used gauze to cover the top, make sure that a fresh one is used after changing the diaper.

To avoid the sticking of the gauze apply some petroleum jelly on it. In case you do notice some infections call the pediatrician .
