How You Can Help Adolescents Develop Leadership Skills

By Janice Yu

In general, teens are immersed not just in high school but in pop culture as well. Consequently, a large portion of their time is spent in school work, pastimes, athletics, extracurricular activities, and anything and everything that's taking place in the entertainment industry. However the adolescent years are also highly formative years. These are the best time to have these kids develop their leadership abilities. Either right out of high school or some years after, adolescents will be entering the job market. It's certainly a smart move to get teens started early developing their leadership abilities. In this article, we're going to show you a few things you can do to help you teach your teenager become a leader.

You need to encourage your teen to get interested in extracurricular activities in school or in the local community. In addition, get your child interested in accepting some sort of leadership role in these activities. As responsibilities multiply, a process of honing leadership abilities will be instituted -- in a fun fashion. On a side note: the fun component shouldn't be neglected. Additionally, it is important that if your child isn't ready or isn't showing any interest in accepting leadership roles, you must never force him or her to. Compelling your teenager to do something he or she doesn't want to would simply cause him or her to resent the activity.

One of the best ways to hone leadership abilities in teenagers is to start working. You can actually encourage your child to get a part-time job after school. This will help your child gain real life work experience which he or she will find extremely advantageous when he or she finishes college. A part-time job will also give your child the chance to talk with managers and supervisors. Your teenager can actually learn something about leadership just by his or her interactions at the workplace.

Are there courses, programs, or workshops which teach leadership and development skills near your home? If there are then it may be a smart idea to take your teen to one. Concerned that your teen will get bored? You needn't be. Usually, these events are interactive and entertaining.

You can also try giving your child materials pertaining to leadership. This could include excellent publications, MP3s, and DVDs on the topic. And if you believe your teenager might benefit from being in a leadership program online, then sign him or her up.

Be sure to continually encourage your teenager to challenge themselves. Getting too stuck in a comfort zone is not a brilliant idea when the goal is to develop leadership skills. Taking a hard or challenging task can help a young adult learn a handful of lessons about developing talents which contribute to good leadership skill.

If you'd like your teenager to become an effective leader, try to implement the tips mentioned. They are neither too complex or too difficult to carry out.
