Positive Parenting Strategies To Help You Get Started

By Erich Park

You've probably heard of positive parenting, but if you haven't, it's a type of parenting wherein you focus on your children's abilities and strengths as you raise them. However, this doesn't suggest that you ignore the negatives like disruptive behavior. Child disciplining is an important part of parenting, as well as ensuring your children behave in a way that is within the limits you've set. Today, though, our focus is going to be on the kind of parenting wherein positive behavior is encouraged and rewarded.

You need to take some time out for yourself if you are to be an effective positive parent to your children. You can't expect yourself to be a positive parent to your children if you're stressed out. No one has unlimited energy or patience and parents have to learn how to take care of themselves as well as their kids. Admittedly, it's a lot harder to take care of yourself when you've got children because most of your time and energy go toward looking after them. Yet you should make sure you are eating well and getting enough rest and exercise. If you're stressed, whether it's because of issues at work or at home, you need to address it immediately. You'll be able to better look after your kids if you look after your well-being.

One challenge that all parents face is to be as consistent as possible with their kids. Naturally, there will be changes in some rules as children get older. There are times flexibility is needed and you need to adjust your approach on certain things. In general, though, whatever rules and standards you implement for your children to follow, you have to be consistent. You also need to make sure that you and your spouse are on the same page regarding the rules. You'll confuse your children if you tell them one thing and your spouse tells them the complete opposite. If other adults, such as babysitters or relatives are involved in the child's life, make sure you make it clear what rules and values you are enforcing so there is consistency.

If you want to practice positive parenting, one of the things you need to do is spend time with your children. You may be busy with work and other responsibilities, but understand that one of your priorities should be to make time for your children. Parents who play with their kids, go places with them and take the time to talk to them every day will form a strong and lasting bond with them. Attend your child's school pays or athletic events. Very often, behavior problems occur when children feel neglected and need attention. Your child's well-being is one of your top priorities so it's important that you make the time to spend some quality time with him or her.

Learning positive parenting skills and applying those skills are things that any parent can do. Positive parenting doesn't require special skills. If you want to practice this parenting approach, you only need to have a willingness to learn. It can be very challenging at times to find enough time to give your child the attention he or she needs. However, keep in mind that children feel a lot more secure when they know that their parents are actively involved in their lives.
