A Guide To Picking SUP Gear For Any Occasion

By James Harris

If you are getting into the sport of stand up paddleboarding, you may think that all you need is a board and a paddle but the fact of the matter is that the right SUP accessories can make your paddling adventures much more comfortable and fun. Here is what you need to choose the right accessories for your needs and budget.

There are many benefits to participating in this sport. One is that you will develop core strength and improve your sense of balance. The sport uses a large board that has a non-slip area on the top. The rider will stand in this area while propelling their board through the water. The paddle that is used is long and has a single blade on one end. The other end usually has a handle of some sort that is held to give the strokes more power.

One of the most basic things that you need to purchase is the board itself. There are a few different models. Some are designed for touring and others are designed for racing. You may want to think about the kind of trips you will be taking on your board and choose a model that suits your paddling style.

The right paddle is also important. You need to consider how tall you are in order to pick a model that is the right height. If it is too short, you will find yourself bending forward in order to get full force strokes and that can throw you off balance or make it much more tiring to paddle your board. Other things to consider are the weight of the paddle and the diameter of the shaft. All of these things can make a particular paddle more or less comfortable to use.

One thing that is necessary is a life jacket or personal flotation device. Some people don't mind wearing a jacket while others prefer a model that is designed like a belt that is worn around the waist. If you do choose a vest rather than a belt, you may want to try on various models and make sure that you can move your arms freely.

If you are thrown from your board you will want to make sure it does not float away on you. If you are purchasing a package of equipment, it may include a tether strap. Some boards don't though. Look for one that is not going to get in the way while you are riding but which is secure enough that you won't lose it off of your leg or arm if you do fall in.

You may also want to consider different pieces of equipment that you will use based on the kind of trip you will be taking. If, for example, you will be traveling on your board and camping, you may want to consider dry bags or other items that can hold gear safely. If you expect that the weather may be less than perfect, clothing such as a dry suit may make your days on the water feel much more comfortable.

While you may want to purchase everything all at once, this may not be the best way to go about gathering things together. Consider getting a few items at a time and trying to get the best quality that you can afford. You will want to make sure that thee items can last you an extended period of time without being damaged or wearing out.
