Discover Everything You Wanted To Know About Baby Clothes For Your New Arrival

By Michelle Quiso

With so many cute infant fashions hanging on the racks of just about any department store, it can be difficult for expectant parents to decide which ones to choose for their new baby. Babies have tender skin that needs to protect, and any clothing they wear needs to fit properly and keep them comfortable. Everything you wanted to know about baby clothes and how to select the right ones outlined here in this helpful guide.

The average infant will produce a lot of laundries, often needing several changes of clothes every day, so it's important to be well prepared with a large supply of easy-care outfits for daily use. It's always best to focus on buying clothes to fit the baby right away and not be too concerned with larger sizes for later; the time will arrive soon enough to purchase these since infants grow fast.

The "layette" is the complete set of infant care essentials. These includes all necessary items of clothing the baby will need to sleep, playing, going outside and such as well as his or her bedding, feeding, and bathing accessories. Parents need to select only those items that can worn and used comfortably and are easy to look after.

One item a baby will need plenty of are the "onesies" which can be worn either under other clothes for additional warmth. Or alone in hot weather, these have loose "raglan" sleeves and convenient snaps, for easy diaper changing. Several pull-over shirts are also great versatile wardrobe staples. Sleepers with long sleeves and covered feet are the best choice in slumber-wear, and help prevent heat loss during sleep that infants are susceptible.

A baby's feet and head should be kept covered when it's colder, so it's necessary to have a few caps and pairs of booties. Knit caps with no irritating side seam and booties with Velcro fasteners and ankle elastics that are not too tight are the most suitable. When teething starts, babies tend to drool, so a few teething bibs will be needed, as well some larger-sized feeding bibs when the child starts eating solid food.

In the first year, a child should also have a few rompers, one piece suits with shirt and shorts with a snap-up crotch. Also "coveralls" for colder weather, which is like a romper only with long legs and sleeves, and for in-between seasons, "shortalls" can be worn, these have short sleeves but long legs.

Cold weather outside means that babies need to be dressed in three layers when they go out. The first layer needs to be loose-fitting, non-absorbent fabric. The second has the job of trapping air and also absorbing perspiration, fleece or wool work well. And the third layer is there to keep out the elements, and should be a wind and water-resistant material like nylon or polyester. Overheating can be avoided by removing a layer or undoing a zipper.

Baby sizes include children who are 10-36 inches tall and weigh between 5 and 29 pounds, or in the age group of newborn to 24 months old. Purchasing one size up from the child's actual age, or weight/height is advisable since baby clothes usually tend to run small.
